Abstract

Maritime transport as the most sustainable transport mode impeded by its dependency on pre- and post-sea transport and hence time consuming and costly transfers from and to other transport modes. Vessel traffic service operations, once established to enhance traffic safety, can provide real time information which has a great potential to support optimum utilisation of transport resources hence fulfilling the requirements of vessel traffic management and information service (VTMIS) as it has been defined within the research work initiated by the Directorate General of Transport and Environment (DG TREN) of the European Commission. The paper provides a vision of a higher degree of integration of maritime transport with other transport modes using real time information from traffic management.
