Abstract

This paper gives an overview of the expertise and technical services developed to build and maintain safe roads, to provide safe road environments, to promote vehicle safety and the use of safety equipment and procedures. These technical services must be implemented to the benefit of road users. The paper describes both the marketing of relevant safety issues to road users and the transfer of the latest technology to road authorities for implementation. Various examples are given of how these services have been implemented by road authorities over recent years for the benefit of road users. Some of the campaigns aimed directly at road users are also highlighted. It is concluded that the provision of safe roads and of safe roads and user-friendly safety systems and devices can, to a large extent, counteract human failure in potential hazardous road traffic situations.
