Abstract

In 1996, KenPro, a program developed within the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research, was used for the first time to calculate the key risk indexes for road safety. In addition to the estimate of the average accident risk, KenPro also provides the dispersion values for the key risk index. A study conducted among various groups of potential users showed that road authorities and consulting firms are very much interested in the KenPro program. Before the program could actually be distributed among other users, however, certain aspects of its current prototype would have to be supplemented and improved. Some of the wishes and suggestions were brought forward by potential users who attended demonstration meetings. A significant number of these improvements for the program involve visual improvements and modifications that will further increase flexibility. It is estimated that making these improvements and modifications of the program would cost 250,000 to 300,000 Dutch guilders. The current prototype contains data for major roads inside urban areas. If the program would be distributed among other users, the data for other road types would have to be added to this databank. If the lower-order roads would be excluded from this supplementation, this would cost 220,000 to 270,000 Dutch guilders. (A)
