Abstract

This article describes Marom, an integrated, highly automated speeding and headway enforcement system, which is now being incorporated in a nationwide enforcement system for Israel. Marom was developed by the Israeli company Driver Safety Systems; it is now being used in several countries, and greatly improves the prospects for sustainable enforcement. For the first time, Marom enables the simultaneous measurement of vehicle speeds and distances between vehicles. The Marom Field Unit is very flexible; it collects and records data about passing vehicles, and identifies and records video images of traffic offenders. It directs two infrared beams towards two specially designed reflectors in the road bed; every passing vehicle crosses the beams and activates the detector. It uses a simple formula, to calculate the distance between two detected vehicles in terms of their speeds and other data. Violation is proved by the combination of video image and offence data. The Marom Data Processing Unit processes data obtained by the Field Units. It helps to identify offenders, and produces a wide variety of reports and statistics for enforcement, road safety, and road planning. The SHALEM system is being designed and developed as a nationwide system in Israel, applying the research and models of first-generation Marom systems.
