Abstract

A study was carried out in order to plan a suitable mass transport system for Shimla, India Comprehensive traffic studies and surveys were conducted to assess the traffic characteristics. Based on the field studies, the transport demand was worked out by adopting 4-stage transport model and the demand for 2016 was assigned to the future road network, establishing mass transport corridors. Subsequently, three alternative mass transport networks were developed and evaluated. As a result, a light rail transit (LRT) network was recommended. The engineering feasibility of the LRT network has also been carried out and discussed in this paper. The French title of the paper is: "Système de transport de masse pour Shimla".
