Abstract

This is an expository paper giving a general account of the use of mathematics in scientific work on road traffic, describing types of problem which have been investigated and mathematical approaches used. Eight distinct types of problem are described, including intersection problems (with or without traffic lights), open-road problems. including the effects of overtaking and of obstructions, generation of car journeys in a community, and geometrical design of road systems.
