Abstract

This article outlines the development of the MATTISSE real-time traffic and travel information system in the Midlands region of England, from its origin as part of a European Union project to become a co-ordinated system of urban traffic control. A partnership venture with the private sector was established and contracted to manage the system for ten years from 2002. Technological advances included internet-based communications architecture and a new user interface offering a substantially improved mapping system. A user group forum was set up, and manuals and guidelines were developed to ensure consistency. In its second year, MATTISSE is expanding both the services offered and the customer base, to include public information kiosks and staff travel information to companies. Revision of the local transport plan included proposals to define a common strategy, linking five urban traffic control centres, marketing region-wide travel information, and developing a centre of excellence. Benefits should include reduction of congestion; improving bus journey times and increasing awareness of travel information.
