Abstract

European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is a major venture by theEuropean Union that was designed to create an interoperable railway network within Europe. Manufacturers of ERTMS strive to attain a competitive edge by demonstrating the efficiency of their systems. Cost effectiveness isone of the significant ways to address efficiency of the system, which deals in maximizing availability and minimizing life cycle cost of the system over the system life cycle. Maximum cost-effectiveness of a system can be achieved through various techniques with maintenance policy optimizationbeing one of the important means. This paper demonstrates the optimization of maintenance policy of a sub-system of ERTMS so as to achieve maximum cost-effectiveness.
