Abstract

To enable pedestrians to be given full consideration when decisions about new roads or road improvement schemes are made, techniques are required to enable the number of affected pedestrians to be estimated and any consequent change in pedestrian amenity to be forecast. The main objectives of this study are: (1) to develop sampling procedures and expansion factors for short duration pedestrian counts; (2) to test existing techniques for predicting numbers of pedestrians and develop alternative techniques as necessary; and (3) to identify the occurrence and cause of pedestrian trip suppression. Different methods have been used to collect the data.
