Abstract

The driver aid system that supports automotive safety plays a major role in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Especially the front and side monitoring system provides the driver with warning information according to the emergency level. It is also very important for the driver aid system to detect the diver's awareness level. In this paper, we describe our recommended location of a CCD camera for the driver monitoring system inside of a vehicle based on the calculated distribution result of driver's eyellipse and data collected through an actual driving test. Furthermore, a method to evaluate the driver's awareness level is explained. This experiment measured how long the drivers closed their eyes while driving by using an image processing technology to assess their awareness level.
