Abstract

This report is the third in a series describing the process of measuring the macrotexture of a road surface using a contactless sensor. The first report described the development of the basic method and the second dealt with the application of the technique in the TRRL mini texture meter, a hand-propelled device intended primarily formonitoring newly-laid rolled asphalt. This report completes the series by describing the high-speed texture meter, which is a vehicle-based system designed for the continuous surveying of long lengths of road at traffic speeds. The report describes the development and evaluation of the machine (now manufactured under licence by WDM Ltd of Bristol) and the accuracy of its measurements. (A)
