Abstract

Traffic congestion is a continuing problem in The Netherlands, and is predicted to increase in future years. The Netherlands is aware that its economic position depends upon highway access by commercial vehicles and yet one of its important goals is to limit the negative environmental impact of excessive commuter traffic. This paper touches upon a long term strategy, and the already examined measure of buses in the emergency lane, the tidal flow lane/carpool lane in preparation and the measure for separate tunnels for target group traffic will be described. Japanese Ministry of Construction and OECD/Road Transport Research Programme held the seminar on "future road transport systems and infrastructures in urban areas" in Chiba, Japan on 4th - 6th June 1991 sponsored by the Japanese organizing committee.
