Abstract

This paper describes a study which investigated the possibility of reliably measuring the effects of alcohol on psychomotor and cognitive functioning at low doses. Forty male and female drinkers participated in 2 identical testing sessions. Alcohol was administered to 1 of 4 target concentrations. Two separate microprocessor-based tasks were used to measure performance. Psychomotor performance was evaluated by an instrument intended to measure information processing functions known to be important in the safe operation of a vehicle. A second repeat human performance measurement system was configured to measure 5 separate cognitive functions. Each test measured the speed and accuracy of the subject in executing a predefined response.
