Abstract

This paper discusses the lessons learned by using gps to measure congestion in Copenhagen. The gps data was collected during the akta road pricing experiment where 500 volunteers were simulating road pricing in Copenhagenusing gps units in their cars. by map matching the data to the road network of Copenhagen it was possible to compare the travel speed within and outside rush hours. The differences were multiplied with traffic intensitieson each road segment leading to 100,000 hours lost in congestion every day. Multiplying with the time value the total cost of congestion are 765 million euro per annum. Other uses of gps data than congestion analysis alsodiscussed.
