Abstract

This paper reports on recent tests to measure and predict skid resistance on road surfaces. Development of new types of road surface and greater traffic intensity has led to a need for information on skid resistance. The previously used parameters were felt to be insufficient and more have been developed, including measuring the surface texture profile and braking deceleration tests. Test sections of road with surfaces of different asphalt mixtures have been used to develop a methodology for measurement of skid resistance, in order to enable prediction of braking deceleration. It was shown that it is possible to use mathematical measurements to determine average braking deceleration.
