Abstract

In Quebec's northern climate, climatic conditions significantly affect the behavior of pavement. During spring thaw, the higher water content of various layers of material reduces their load bearing capacity. In order to protect the road network, the Ministere des Transports du Quebec imposes restrictions on the weight per axle of heavy vehicles during the spring thaw. A study was conducted to ascertain te result of these restrictions. Traffic and deterioration profiles were combined in order to calculate the effect of spring load on the life expectancy of the pavement and the cost of preserving the road network.
