Abstract

This brochure summarizes the main aspects of the Dutch Bicycle Master Plan. The aim of the brochure is twofold: (1) to give information on the current policy of the national government regarding bicycle use; and (2) to provide arguments and ideas in order to stimulate new initiatives and measures in cities, villages and regions. The brochure briefly describes the possible role of the bicycle in enhancing both quality of life and accessibility. The objectives of the Dutch government for the period up to the year 2010 refer to: a) the changeover from car to bicycle use; b) the changeover from car to bicycle/public transport use; c) road safety; d) theft and shelters; and e) promotion. In order to achieve them, a number of measures should be taken, for instance infrastructural measures. Finally, the brochure briefly gives information on: (i) the parties responsible for stimulating bicycle traffic; (ii) the central government's financial contributions in this field; and (iii) projects in which the Dutch central government is involved as initiator or as a counsellor. There is also an English version of this publication, titled 'Bicycle Master Plan : bicycles first. Structured Scheme for Traffic and Transport SVV." (C 1689 a)
