Abstract

The Melbourne City Link strategically integrates and upgrades a significant part of Melbourne's road transport network. At an estimated cost of around $2 billion (Australian), the City Link project represents one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Australia. The City Link is the first major private road development in the State of Victoria and it will be operated as a tollway, using electronic tolling, by Transurban City Link Limited. This paper considers that background to the Link, the reasons for undertaking the project as a private undertaking, the development of the Link and the role technology has and will play in this project.
