Abstract

The author discusses the mental maps built up by people in the vicinity of a new tramway service linking the towns of Saint-Denis and Bobigny near Paris. The author suggests that a developer's perception of a project may not accord with that of the individuals using it. The Paris authorities were at pains to produce a particular effect. Two years after the tramway went into service, a survey of the users was carried out. Brief details are given of the survey carried out and the results obtained including mental maps. The tramway had a number of effects including the perception that Saint-Denis and Bobigny were closer together but other parts of Paris more distant.
