Abstract

This paper discusses the analysis of merging behavior and in pc:rticular gap acceptance and rejection behvior at a freeway entrance ramp.The tone of the paper is purely empirical.No at temp is made to develop a theory of merging,nor to validate any exis- ting analytical or simulation models of the merging process. Rather the emphasis is placed on the development of basic empili- cal information of the type which might be utilized as input in future theoretical studies, or in the design of a real-time free- way control system.
