Abstract

This short article presents the modifications which have been made to normal underground design in order to make the new METEOR line in Paris more accessible to disabled people. The design features include: a) modifications to the acoustics in the ticket halls to decrease noise; b) enhancing the visibility of signs, timetables, and stairs; c) improved lighting; d) enlarging doorways and passages to make them accessible by wheelchair; e) provision of lifts and escalators as well as stairs; f) provision of audible as well as visual information about timetables, and about the arrival or departure of trains, both at stations and on the trains themselves; g) improvements in platform design which will make them both safer and more accessible.
