Abstract

This paper shows the use of mathematical models to provide a way of analysing the risk level of a section of road, the type of accident occurring and the effect of safety measures taken. Statistical methods used employ the Poisson and Binomiale distributions. The Poisson hypothesis is applied to find the distribution of accidents. Binomiale distribution then calculates the probability of certain types of accidents, and is also used to assess the significance of the variations of the number of accidents. These models have been included in METODS software to make them easier to use in accident research.
