Abstract

The Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system is to be introduced in the expressways in Japan around 2000. In this system, 5.8 GHz-radio communication equipment for communicating between RSE (road-side equipment) and OVE (on-vehicle equipment) is expected to play an important role. The correct fee has to be collected on the ETC lanes even when ETC vehicles (a vehicle mounted OVE corresponding to ETC system) come close to each other or in line. When the ETC system is introduced, the mixture of ETC vehicles and non-ETC vehicles (vehicles not mounted OVE corresponding to ETC system) is expected at the beginning. Even in such a situation, the ETC vehicle must be smoothly processed at a toll gate, while the non-ETC vehicle must be correctly specified and the fee collected by the conventional method. (A*)
