Abstract

Methods and instruments that can be used as a basis for road safety policy; An inventory. This report presents an updated, extensive inventory of methods and instruments that are used or can be used by policy makers at regional and other levels to make, prioritize or substantiate road safety policy. This inventory makes use of earlier, similar surveys, which, however, contain fewer methods and discuss them less extensively. The inventory is first of all intended to provide policy makers and their assistants at the regional, national and local level, with a better insight in the methods and instruments that are available to them. The inventory also shows them which characteristics, like quality and user-friendliness, these methods have. A second purpose of this publication is to show policy makers which methods are better or less suitable to serve as a basis for specific policy issues. The third, more far-reaching purpose of this report is to be a basis for a better harmony regarding methods and instruments that are used in the Netherlands to substantiate road safety policy. This report is intended to initiate a discussion about this topic and to serve as a support for further action.
