Abstract

SMART is a project within the EC-programme DRIVE. The objective is to study the use of microprocessor- or integrated circuit (IC)- or smart cards within the transport sector. The project is scheduled to finish with a set specifications for a prototype development. The card described is one that can be used for a variety of applications, examples being; a) automatic tariff collection on public transport; b) parking fees payment; and c) road pricing. Details of the organization of computerized files stored within the card for each of these separate functions are provided briefly, along with brief details of: a) the central control systems; and b) the communications links both on the car, and at the roadside, which are required if the system is to work.
