ESCOTA, the licence-holder for operation of the A8 motorway in the south of France, is facing continuously increasing traffic and important congestion problems. For this reason, two years ago ESCOTA launched and implemented a computerised operational assistance system, MIGRAZUR. Its main objective is to keep providing the service expected by drivers: road safety, traffic flow rate, reliable and appropriate information about traffic conditions. At the heart of MIGRAZUR, an expert system, implementing ESCOTA's operating policy, advises the operator with a list of actions appropriate to the traffic situation. In this paper, the supplier, STERIA and ESCOTA produce an assessment after two years of operation, on the implementation of a traffic management policy with an expert system. Emphasis is placed on the man-machine relationship within the system so that man can maintain his place in the decision-making process.
