Abstract

This paper deals with high volume urban main road traffic control systems and systems for motorways with a large traffic volume. Some examples are provided of what could be gained if traffic signal controlled highways were optimized from an environmental point of view. Furthermore, the paper dwells on the subject of integration of traffic signals and intelligent speed control systems in cars. When looking at motorways it is concluded that those parts of the Swedish motorway system that experience congestion problems are few, but a remedy is needed. Real time data could be used in order to control actual speed through RDS (Radio Data System), variable message signs and information to the car computer. This data could also be used to detect accidents or even prevent accidents and provide drivers with the right sort of information. Furthermore, ramp metering is discussed.
