Abstract

The prevention of noise pollution should begin at the source. The decrease of noise emission by vehicles increases the ease of living with road traffic. In the battle against noise pollution a difference should be made between factors regarding traffic and factors regarding the road. A better traffic circulation can give a better noise situation. In the netherlands it will be possible in the future to be given a governmental grant for such measures. Some of the measures discussed in this article are: a lower traffic intensity on main roads by the use of an alternative route by freight transport, the closing of a shopping street for motorised traffic, the restraint of lorries in residential areas and the prevention of rat-run traffic.
