Abstract

TO BE ABLE TO CONVERT KINETIC ENERGY INTO DEFORMATION ENERGY THE DEFORMATION RESISTANCE OF A VEHICLE'S FRONT SECTION HAS TO BE PROPORTIONAL TO THE SQUARE OF THE TEST BARRIER COLLISION SPEED. USING THIS KNOWN RELATION AND A MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR A SIDEWAYS COLLISION, AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO SELECT A CAR FRONT SECTION WHICH, IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, OFFERS THE OCCUPANTS MAXIMUM SAFETY AND MINIMUM RISK OF INJURY.
