This article describes the high level of occupational stress and related health problems experienced by public transit bus drivers, and presents a work organization strategy designed to improve this situation. This strategy, called "mixed work", involves a combination of different tasks to relieve the monotony of the job. Mixed work reduces the driver's time at the steering wheel and requires the bus company to design new job activities. Principles of mixed work are discussed, and current and future applications of this concept are described.
