Abstract

The Motor Industry Software Reliability Association (MISRA) is prominent amongst those seeking to apply safety engineering principles within the road transport sector. Of particular note is MISRA's adoption of the concept of controllability when assessing the risks associated with hazards encountered by moving vehicles. The work undertaken by MISRA had the intent of ascertaining the engineering rigour required to develop in-vehicle ITS. However, this paper argues that the controllability concept is not inherently restricted to in-vehicle systems, since it is the system's relationship with the driver that presents the potential causation of hazards and, in general terms, it is immaterial where such a system is located. The use of MISRA controllability categories to roadside ITS is then illustrated by reference to existing applications. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
