Abstract

Road works, especially during summers, when traffic volumes reach their top values, cause disturbances in steady traffic flows. On rural two-lane highways only one lane is in use for traffic. Then the stream is half duplex or bidirectional, but not simultaneously. While in one direction vehicles pass the working area at a reduced speed, in the other direction vehicles are halted and waiting. Time loss, increased fuel consumption, emissions and vehicle operation costs are consequences of these summertime road works. In this presentation a study is made, of how much an implementation of telematics can decrease these disadvantages and what is the economic profitability of the application of telematics.
