Abstract

Mitsubishi Motors has developed the Advanced Preview Distance Control (APDC) system as part of Mitsubishi Motors' ASV-2 project. APDC is a system to enhance low speed operating performance of the conventional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). Lowering the operating speed allows the driver more convenient operation of the vehicle. However achieving a smooth transition from/to the stopping condition is a new engineering challenge. To satisfy those conflicting requirements, the authors have conducted both engineering and Human Factors experiments, and successfully developed the system for public demonstration. The system incorporates signals from multiple sensors to accurately detect the headway to the preceding vehicle and a control logic that enables smooth adjustment of the headway. APDC was demonstrated to the public during the ASV-2/Demo 2000 Public Showcase in Tsukuba, Japan, in November 2000.
