Abstract

Recently proposed ad hoc networks can significantly minimise the end-to-end delay between network nodes through packet replication and their managed broadcast dissemination. Ongoing research has revealed that, in an ad hoc vehicular network setting, node density information can be usefully exploited to extract vehicular traffic congestion information in specific sections of the network or city. The effectiveness of this approach is studiedfor a varying degree of penetration of communication-enabled nodes, thus establishing useful thresholds in realistic scenarios. When coupled with infrastructure communication and a range of other mobile devices, such a diverse heterogonous ad hoc network can serve multiple city management functions such as traffic and parking information, tolling, and security.
