Abstract

The Governing Body of the University of Groningen has given an assignment to devise a plan for a total University environmental care system. Traffic and transportation, being notorious polluters, are a natural part of this. In this framework a limited inventory with respect to commuter traffic regarding a fraction of the University personnel was made. All personnel of two locations received an inquiry at home. The data show that about half of the University employees commutes by bicycle and about a quarter uses a car for this purpose regularly. One of the primary objectives, a decrease of 20% in automobility, is converted into a number of recommendations. The most important recommendation is the appointment of a transportation co-ordinator, who should be capable of taking care of the consequences of the traffic and transport aspects of the environmental care system.
