The Dutch National Travel Survey : towards better information supply. Every year CBS investigates the mobility of the Dutch population in cooperation with the AVV Transport Research Centre. CBS performs the survey since 1978 and AVV finances the extension of the sample size since 1995. This survey is also well known as the Onderzoek Verplaatsingsgedrag (OVG). Because of a declining response rate between 1985 and 1997 CBS and AVV decided in 1998 to renew the survey design. In this year the Neu Kontiv Design (NKD) was introduced. Since then the OVG reaches response rates of around 70% and the design is more flexible. The last years however the extension of the sample size has become more expensive. As result of this, the sample size has become smaller and the reliability of the data at the regional level has decreased. For this reason and the reason that CBS is not able to use the flexibility of the survey design to answer actual policy questions, AVV decided to start its own travel survey in 2004. The Mobiliteitsonderzoek Nederland (MON) might be a chance to implement new subjects into the investigation of the mobility of the Dutch population. This chance of AVV to use the flexibility of the survey design is a new service concept. In the OVG the data are supply dominated. In MON the data are demand dominated. Users are able to ask for specific topics or a regional extension of the sample size. AVV interacts with their users in a more facilitative way. (Author/publisher)
