This paper presents the first results of the PAQUID enquiry involving 2792 persons aged over 65 years and who live at home in Gironde. The purpose of the study was to ascertain how many old people were confined to their homes near neighbourhoods and why this was so. 97.3% of these persons have no physical disabilities for travelling and 82.3% of them are capable of travelling alone. Among the persons that can travel, 9.7% confine themselves to their homes and 10.5% to their neighbourhoods. A multivaried analysis by logistic regression shows 5 confinement risk factors: age, sex (with women being more prone to remain at home than men), mental depression, mental deterioration and living alone.
