Abstract

A method is described for the approximation of vehicle actuated traffic control for application in mesoscopic traffic models. The approach is based upon simulation of microscopic traffic control. The microscopic traffic controller is used to derive a substitute controller for the mesoscopic model by observing input and output values of the microscopic controller. Decomposed parts of the microscopic controller are used in its mesoscopic approximation. The rule based substitute controller underwent a stepwise refinement of structure and parameters until a satisfying control behavior could be achieved. The conclusions are drawn based on a simulation study with both a microscopic and mesoscopic model of the identical intersection traffic controller. The simulation example illustrates final conclusions and restrictions on application of the approximated controller. Results have proved the accuracy to be sufficient for mesoscopic simulation requirements. (A*)
