Abstract

A modal split model was developed for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in 1964 and formal analyses of mode choice behaviour have not been possible since that time because of the absence of data. The recent availability of 1986 TTS (Transportation Tomorrow Survey) data has provided new opportunities for studying the factors influencing modal choice decisions and for modelling these decisions. The aim of the research reported in this paper is to document modal choice decisions by commuters in the GTA in 1986 and to examine the extent to which modal split models (aggregate and disaggregate) are able to reflect modal choices of commuters in the GTA.
