Abstract

A practical example of the way traffic signal control may be used to deliver public transport benefits is given in the queue relocation and selective vehicle detection systems used in Southampton and York, UK. Mathematical traffic control models are described for simple junctions and for networks (such as TRANSYT, SCOOT and SCATS), and the use of more sophisticated models to deliver transport aims such as cleaner air, reduced congestion, and easier and safer cycling and walking is considered.
