Abstract

The SHRP-NL research programme was aimed at improving the knowledge on the long term performance of flexible pavements. The performance data gathered served as the basis for improving essential components of pavement management systems, such as performance models and maintenance strategies. The performance data were gathered over a period of ten years on a comprehensive set of some 250 test sections, located on in-service roads ranging from motorways to rural roads. This report starts with a description of the overall research plan of SHRP-NL and on the data acquisition methods used to gather data on the performance of the test sections. Next, the development of pavement performance models for use in pavement management systems is described. For each of the distresses to be modelled, a description is first given of the observed development of the distress, followed by the actual model development. Next, the application of the models in the pavement management systems used in the Netherlands is dealt with. The basis for the development of maintenance strategies is the observed performance of maintenance applied to the test sections. The large variation in this performance is studied on the basis of the composition of the applied materials. For falling weight deflectometer measurements used in the design of maintenance measures, a system for application of such measurements at the network level of pavement management is described. The system has been thoroughly assessed for its applicability in the practice of pavement management. This report concludes with some observations on the pros and cons of long term, large scale investigations working with data gathered in the practice of pavement construction and management. From these observations, recommendations are given for structuring future research projects dealing with observed pavement performance. The last chapter of this report then presents the main conclusions from the SHRP-NL research programme.
