Abstract

This article describes a method for constructing car pools, van pools and bus rides for persons for whom road transportation is known to be the best alternative for travelling to work. Before describing the method, an exact formulation of the problem of developing a transportation plan for employees is given. The differences between this method, and existing routing programs which solve the "Vehicle Routing Problem" are also mentioned. The main difference is that these programs have been developed specifically for the transportation of goods, whereas the model described has been developed specificallyfor the transport of persons. Finally, a description is given of the results of four different scenarios of a practical test carried out with the coded method to calculate, among other things, the numberof vehicle miles, and the costs incurred by travelling to work. It appears that the method both increases the quality of transportationplans, and produces considerable time savings when formulating sucha plan.
