Modelling driver behaviour on motorways : description of the SImulation model for MOtorway traffic with NExt generation vehicles SiMoNe model.

Abstract

The subject of this study is driver behaviour on motorways. It is essential to model driver behaviour realistically in order to study traffic flow characteristics. The background to the study is the expected introduction of longitudinal driver support systems, or so-called Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC). The report gives a description of a theory about driver behaviour and its modeling approach. The `SImulation model for MOtorway traffic with NExt generation vehicles' (SiMoNe) model is developed. This microscopic traffic simulation model takes into account the presence of new categories of vehicles equipped with longitudinal support systems. The global structure of the SiMoNe model is presented, and its main building blocks are identified. The SiMoNe building blocks are discussed in more detail directly related to the car-following task. The lane-change logics and the model building blocks are also presented. The building blocks responsible for the driver support system functioning are described. The SiMoNe model is suitable for representing conventional motorway traffic and the foreseen future with vehicles equipped with ICC systems. (A)
