Abstract

This paper describes the microsimulation modelling of a number of complex junction designs for guided bus priority measures using a microsimulation model suite. The paper firstly introduces the concept of guided bus and then argues that the complex interactions, which such systems introduce into the network, are best represented by microsimulation models. The paper describes the microsimulation modelling techniques developed, the variables used to represent the guided bus systems and the outputs from the simulation that can be used to assess their performance. It then provides illustrative examples from the modelling of two junctions and a section of 'interrupted' guideway as originally proposed in the East Leeds guided bus scheme. The first junction being a staggered crossroads, whilst the second, a high-capacity crossroads. The paper will highlight the challenges in modelling complex guided bus designs, and suggest facilities which simulation models required in order to successfully model such schemes. (A)
