Abstract

This chapter describes two classes of model that provide a computational foundation for simulating the action that drivers perform on hand controls in vehicles. The hand controls include buttons, knobs, levers, slides, stalks and other physical components that operatethe radio, the HVAC, windshield wiper, turn signal, ignition etc.. The two classes of model are referred to as HANDY-1 and HANDY-2. HANDY-1 has quantitative foundations in additive multicomponent models from the field of information processing. HANDY-2 is inspired by qualitative, strategic models in cognitive science that have adopted production system architectures. The advantages and shortcomings of the two classes of models are discussed.
