Abstract

Failure to reduce speed appropriately appears to be major cause of accidents on rural curves. The effect of a solar- powered flashing red chevron on speed of approach to curves was evaluated at three sites. At some distance from the curves, cars were travelling much more slowly when the experimental chevron was operating. A flashing device is an effective treatment for reducing approach speeds at hazardous curves.
