Abstract

Transportation agencies, k trying to keep up with urban traffic demands, are considering all measures that will safely add capacity to the freeway network. ne approach that is inexpensive and takes little time to implement is the modification of the freeway lane striping to squeeze in an additional lane of travel. This paper examines the areas in which this technique could be used, the potential costs and benefits, and the problems that will be encountered.
