Abstract

Monitoring the effects of governmental policies has become a big issue in The Netherlands in the last decade. Traffic and transport plans that were made in the early 90's encouraged national, regional and local authorities to develop extensive monitoring activities. Firstly, this paper looks back on monitoring activities in the last five years and the role of policy evaluation. Legislation (a new traffic and transport planning law) and the new national traffic and transport plan will play an important role in the development of monitoring activities. But local and regional authorities must be aware of the specific situation and the measures they can take to reach the goals that are formulated. The paper ends with recommendations for developing monitoring activities in plans on the regional and local scale. (A)
