Abstract

This paper aims to show the possibility of using mobile communication devices for travel and activity survey. It describes how the positioning technology as a function of a cellular phone system is applied to determine the time and location of a passenger. A PHS based mobile communication device with a location positioning function is handed to an individual who joins the travel and activity survey. A pilot survey was made in Osaka City in which ten individuals participated for two weeks. A transfer method of the individual's location positioning data to an activity diary is developed. It is shown that the accuracy of positioning data is sufficient and the estimated travel behaviour is consistent with reported behaviour. The PHS supported system is found useful for various data collection in travel and activity survey in the future. (A*)
