Abstract
In most EEC countries there was a major rise in the incidence of sudden infant deaths between 1960-1980. This increase was all the more remarkable in view of the fact that infant deaths due to all major causes decreased during this period. In 1980 the proportion of deaths due to sudden infant death syndrome in the FRG, France, the Netherlands, the U.K. and Denmark was 8-15% of total infant deaths.
